Startup City – Episode 1 – Introduction

Hi, I’m Ja Shia, and I’m not where I want to be in life, and I’ve decided to do something about it. Now before everyone gets all worried, let me just state that I’m content. I’ve been a digital artist for about 15 years and I love doing my work. I’m a perfectionist when it comes to my projects, and have always taken pride in having a great work ethic, and like most people, was told just work hard, get good grades in school, go to college and get a good job, and you’ll be set. However, there’s this little thing called the economy, and job security for digital artists is always tenuous, at best. This leaves me, and a lot of people, with a little problem: how do we continue to do the work we love, but also feel secure and stable financially? The answer I keep coming around to is, start your own business, which has always been a dream of mine, but I don’t have the first clue where to start. That is where this blog comes in.

I think a lot of people go through similar feelings when they want to run a business, and even though there’s a lot of information out there, it’s difficult to know where to start. Most startup books tell you, “start here,” but how do you know following their steps will lead to anything, after all the book only cost 15 dollars, and it can’t be that easy, right? Well, let’s find out.

Using my own business as a case project, I want to show a personal, and ground level view of starting a company. Through a weekly, sometimes daily video chronicle, I will discuss the successes and failures of following the available books, templates, guides, advice and self-help information on starting and running a business.

And, I’ll do this for 1 year. I’m in no way a business genius, but I do know how to make a video and communicate, and together, we’ll see what works, and what doesn’t.

The one thing I’m asking from you the subscriber is if you have comments or topic suggestions for future videos, please let me know. I want this to be an exchange, and your feedback will definitely improve the blog.

I said at the beginning of this video that I’m not where I want to be, and in a year, I think I’ll be there. Let’s get started!
